Stephen Tompkinson

Biography

Stephen Tompkinson is an English actor who trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1988. He won a 1987 Carleton Hobbs Bursary and worked with the BBC Radio Drama Company before moving into television. He played the unethical reporter Damien Day in the satirical comedy Drop the Dead Donkey from 1990 to 1998, and was named best TV comedy actor at the 1994 British Comedy Awards. His television roles include Marcus in Chancer, Father Peter Clifford in Ballykissangel, Trevor Purvis in Grafters, Danny Trevanion in Wild at Heart, and Alan Banks in DCI Banks. His film work includes Brassed Off (1996) and Hotel Splendide (2000), and he took a lead role in Harrigan (2013). He appeared on the London stage in Art and Spamalot, and directed the BBC drama The Lightning Kid in 2006.

Early training
Tompkinson trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, where his classmates included James Nesbitt and Rufus Sewell, and he graduated in 1988.

During his final year at drama school, Tompkinson won the 1987 Carleton Hobbs Bursary, which led to a contract with the BBC's Radio Drama Company.
A role that slipped away
Tompkinson was replaced by Alistair McGowan as Private Simon 'Spock' Matlock in the BBC comedy drama All Quiet on the Preston Front after the first series because he had other commitments.
Behind the camera
Tompkinson bought the rights to Kingsley Amis's novel Lucky Jim so he could play the central character. ITV finally showed the mini-series in 2003 after a long delay.

Tompkinson played King Arthur in Monty Python's Spamalot at the Playhouse Theatre on 20 November 2012, which was his first musical theater role in London's West End.
