Plot summary
At the funeral of his wife Margaret, Amadeus Ross delivers a eulogy that shows how far his memory has slipped. Three months later his son Nick and granddaughter Matilda, called Tilda, visit him in Connecticut and see that he cannot live by himself. Nick persuades him to move into the family's house in England. Amadeus's presence brings strain. He sets a kitchen fire while baking a cake and sets off fireworks at the summer party, and Sarah, Nick's wife, moves out for a while. Dr. Holst tells Nick that a retirement home is unavoidable. Tilda refuses that answer, and her pediatrician, Dr. Edwards, says that places a sick person knows well can help, so she plans a journey to Venice.
