Plot summary
Hannah Gadsby made Nanette partly in response to the public argument in Australia that preceded the change in the law allowing same-sex marriage, and soon after learning they had ADHD and autism. The show takes apart the nature and conventions of comedy while Gadsby tells stories from a life as a lesbian and gender-nonconforming person in conservative Tasmania, among people prejudiced against LGBTQ people. Their material reaches into their comedy career, their family and their university years, and turns to Vincent van Gogh's mental health and to Pablo Picasso, whose Cubism Gadsby discusses while regarding him as a misogynist. Earlier in their career, Gadsby leaned on self-deprecating humor; the frustration they feel with the form of stand-up, and the wish to have their story heard properly, shape Nanette around their decision to quit comedy.
