Plot summary
In Oslo, the dead come back on a hot summer day. Mahler is at the grave of his grandson Elias when he collapses; he wakes lying across the grave, digs up the coffin and finds the boy alive but decaying. He takes Elias home, and Anna, the boy's mother, returns from a night shift to find her son in bed. David is at work when he is called about his wife Eva's accident; she dies at the hospital before he arrives, then starts to breathe again. Tora, whose partner Elisabet has died, bathes and dresses her. Across the city, the newly resurrected walk the streets in a trance, unable to speak.
