Plot summary
Bernhard Borge, a writer of crime fiction, and his wife Sonja leave Oslo for a cabin deep in the Østerdal forest, where Liljan Werner's brother Bjørn lives. With them go the psychoanalyst Kai Bugge, the magazine editor Gabriel Mørk, and the lawyer Harald Gran, Liljan's fiancé. The visitors find the cabin empty, and Bjørn's dog lies dead at the lake close by. An old story clings to the place: a man who lived in the cabin is said to have killed his sister and her lover and then drowned himself in the water, and anyone who stays there is held to be drawn toward the same death. The guests set themselves to untangle what happened.
