Plot summary
Thelma has grown up in a devout Christian family in the Norwegian countryside, protected by her father, Trond, and her disabled mother, Unni. Against her parents' wishes she enrolls at a university in Oslo, where she knows no one. In the library she suffers a seizure that doctors cannot explain. Anja, a fellow student, becomes her friend, and Thelma tastes wine and cigarettes for the first time. Her feelings for Anja trouble her and conflict with the beliefs she was raised in, and she wishes she did not love her. Doctors examine her to find the cause of the seizures, and during the tests her thoughts keep returning to Anja.
