Plot summary
On Halloween in Haddonfield, Illinois, ten-year-old Michael Myers has already shown signs of psychopathic tendencies. He kills his abusive stepfather Ronnie White, his older sister Judith, her boyfriend Steven Haley and his school bully Wesley Rhoades, sparing only his baby sister, whom he calls Boo. The trial is among the longest the state has seen, and it ends with a first-degree murder conviction and a sentence to Smith's Grove Sanitarium, where he is placed under the care of the child psychologist Dr. Samuel Loomis. Michael cooperates at first with Loomis and with his mother Deborah, who visits him regularly. Over the following months he dissociates, fixates on the papier-mâché masks he makes and withdraws from everyone around him, including his mother.

- Development of another direct sequel to the Halloween series suddenly halted when Moustapha Akkad was killed in the 2005 Amman hotel bombings while attending a wedding in Jordan, and his son Malek decided to take the series in a different direction.
- About four days before Halloween reached theaters, a workprint version leaked online and spread across BitTorrent sites; Rob Zombie said the leaked cut was an older version of the film, unlike what was about to be released.
- Its $30.5 million opening broke the box-office record for the Labor Day weekend, beating the 2005 record of $20.1 million set by Transporter 2, and it held that record until Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021.
