Plot summary
Mike Enslin is a skeptical author who writes books about haunted places without believing in any of them. While promoting his latest title in Hermosa Beach, California, a postcard arrives showing The Dolphin, a New York City hotel, and carrying the warning not to enter room 1408. He takes it as a challenge and asks for the room at the front desk, where the manager, Gerald Olin, tries to talk him out of it. Olin says that nobody has lasted more than an hour inside in ninety-five years, and offers bribes; Mike insists and threatens legal action. Preparations are made, and Mike settles into the room with his mini-cassette recorder, describing its ordinary look and the absence of anything supernatural.
