Plot summary
In 1979, ten-year-old Smith Bhatnagar moves with his Indian family to a small American town. His father Bhaaskar and mother Nalini try to balance their Indian heritage with the American dream they came for, and Smith feels pulled between the two. He falls for Amy Brunner, the girl next door, and is drawn to her father Butch, a cowboy figure he wishes his own father could resemble. Smith secretly eats Kentucky Fried Chicken although the family is vegetarian, wears a Saturday Night Fever costume, and must bring a yellow squash instead of a pumpkin for a school Halloween project. As his feelings for Amy grow, his wish to become a good old boy takes him further from the boy his parents expect him to be.
