Jacqueline Maillan
Biography
Jacqueline Maillan was a French comic performer who, after moving to Paris at 21, enrolled at René Simon's drama school with ambitions as a tragedian. Her performance in Racine's Athalie drew laughter from fellow students rather than tragic sympathy, so she turned to comedy. She excelled in light stage comedies including Folle Amanda, La Facture, and Madame Sans-Gêne, appeared in revues such as Ah! les belles bacchantes and the musical Féfé de Broadway, and was among the earliest women to perform one-woman shows in a field then dominated by men. Her movie work was less celebrated, though she was remembered as the scatterbrained spouse in Squeak-squeak (1963) and the patriotic mother in Gramps Is in the Resistance (1983). She also starred in Pierre Mondy's poorly received Appelez-moi Mathilde and later worked in Jean-Pierre Mocky's harsh comic style. She died in 1992.
