Plot summary

Victor Barelle is a legal advisor. His wife Isa leaves him and he is fired from his job on the same day. He looks for comfort among friends and relatives, but each of them is busy with worries of their own, and the conversations he has move through doctors and pills, second families, unfaithfulness, racial prejudice, junk food and the dread of growing old. Nobody close to him has time for him, and his morale begins to falter. Then he meets Michou, a homeless man, simple and clinging, who attaches himself to Victor and is the one person willing to listen to him.
