Plot summary
Eleven-year-old Nim Rusoe lives on a hidden island in the South Pacific with her widowed father Jack, a marine biologist, and with the animals that keep her company there. Jack sets out alone on a two-day trip to collect a nanoplankton he has named Protozoa nim, and Nim stays behind to watch over the eggs of a sea turtle, the two agreeing to talk by satellite phone. When a cyclone hits Jack's boat, the calls stop. Nim sends an email asking the explorer Alex Rover, hero of the adventure novels she loves, to come and help her. The message reaches Alexandra Rover instead, the author of those novels, an agoraphobic in San Francisco who has not stepped outside her door in sixteen weeks.
