Plot summary
Charlie Hansen loses both parents in a Chicago car crash and goes to his grandmother Agatha's home in Demopolis, Alabama. She lifts his spirits with a pet mouse he names Daisy. At a store, a witch coaxes the boy with a snake and candy, and Agatha's arrival frightens her off. Agatha tells Charlie how a witch once cursed her friend Alice, leaving her a chicken for life. Believing a witch is behind her cough, Agatha takes Charlie to a seaside hotel, the Grand Orleans Imperial Island, where her cousin Eston runs the kitchen. There she shows Charlie how to spot a witch: gloves over clawed hands, a wig hiding a bald head, square feet without toes, a mouth that opens to the ears and nostrils that stretch to sniff out children.
