Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Jane Fonda made the film as the first project of her own company, IPC Films, named for the Indochina Peace Campaign, after meeting the paraplegic veteran Ron Kovic at an antiwar rally. Kovic had just finished Born on the Fourth of July, later filmed by Oliver Stone with Tom Cruise.
SPOILER
Michael Cimino, who turned the script down, said Jane Fonda replaced the ending. In his account Bruce Dern's character originally took a heavy machine gun onto the Los Angeles freeway and shot up five lanes of traffic, instead of drowning himself out of guilt.- Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson and Sylvester Stallone were all offered the male lead and all declined. Jon Voight, out of fashion since Midnight Cowboy, had been considered for the husband but campaigned to play the paraplegic veteran, with Fonda pushing for him.
