Plot summary
Jake Benson, an old rancher, has lost his herd to rustlers and has only his granddaughter Betty to keep him going; he is sending her to college. Jerry Mason, the son of Jake's former partner in the cattle business, comes west at his dying father's wish and finds the old man penniless. The two set up a blacksmith shop in the nearby town. When a horse is brought in, a chunk of quartz laced with gold falls from its hoof, and they trace the rock to a creek and a mine. They sell their gold to Harris, the local assayer, and the town fills with guesses about where it comes from. Betty arrives to live with her grandfather.
