Plot summary
Jonathan Preest is the one atheist in Meanwhile City, a comic-book metropolis where every citizen is required by law to follow a religion. He wears a mask and works as a vigilante, and his enemy, the Individual, has taken a young girl; while Preest searches the streets for her, the city's authorities arrest him. In London, four lives are drawing together. Emilia is an art student who turns her self-destruction into projects, and one of them leaves her waking in a hospital. Peter Esser, a religious man, comes to that same hospital asking about his son David, a soldier who returned from Iraq unstable and then vanished. Milo has been left by his fiancée days before the wedding, and he cannot shake the conviction that Sally, a red-haired friend from his childhood, is somewhere near.
