Plot summary
For the first time, John notices signs of aging, and a cut he takes on a hunting trip heals more slowly than it should. He teaches comparative religion at a college in Chico, California, goes by the surname Young there, and is married to Carolyn Kittriss, a fellow faculty member. Isabel, a student who has borrowed books from his shelves, finds a volume written by Dr. Jenkins and signed for John Oldman. She seeks out the controversial book Jenkins published, an account of a 14,000-year-old man, and shares it with Tara, Liko and Philip, who compare its subject with their teacher. The book's claim that the man was Jesus Christ tests Philip's faith.
