Plot summary
In 1897, bounty hunter Max Borlund warns Joe Cribbens, a gambler and robber he once put behind bars, against acting on the vow Cribbens made to come looking for him. A friend then brings Borlund to the businessman Martin Kidd, who wants his wife, Rachel, brought back from Chihuahua, Mexico, where he says the army deserter Elijah Jones is holding her. The officer who lends Borlund Sergeant Alonzo Poe does so because Poe knew Jones and carries a map to the hideout. Riding south, the two men meet Tiberio Vargas, a landowner who robs travelers, and Borlund refuses to pay what Vargas demands. Cribbens makes his own way toward Chihuahua.

- Christoph Waltz's bounty hunter was modeled on a real lawman, Chris Madsen, a US Marshal from Denmark. Writer-director Walter Hill said a European immigrant hero was an off-center way into a western after the Joel McCrea, Randolph Scott and John Wayne mould, though he stressed the role was fictionalized.
- Actor Shawn-Caulin Young filed a grievance in October 2021 against stunt coordinator and second unit director Allan Graf, saying he was used as a target and hit in the face by shrapnel and gunpowder debris without suitable eye and ear protection. The production disputed his account.
