Plot summary
In 1882 in Old Stump, Arizona, Albert Stark works as a sheep farmer and dreads the dangers of frontier life. When his girlfriend Louise ends their relationship because he refuses to defend himself in a duel, he decides to move to San Francisco. Anna and Lewis ride into town posing as siblings who mean to build a farm, and Lewis ends up in jail after shooting the pastor's son in a saloon brawl. Albert pulls Anna clear during the fight and the two become friends. At the county fair, Louise's new boyfriend Foy beats Albert in a shooting contest, Anna outshoots Foy, and Albert challenges Foy to a duel. Anna offers to train him.

- Liam Neeson, who normally hides his Irish accent on screen, agreed to play the villain Clinch only if he could use his real accent, telling Jimmy Fallon he made the demand because a Family Guy episode had already joked about him playing a cowboy with an Irish accent.
- Director Edgar Wright later admitted he privately celebrated when A Million Ways to Die in the West flopped, because Seth MacFarlane had mocked Wright's own box-office bomb Scott Pilgrim vs. the World by tweeting "Scott Pilgrim 0, the World 2."
- An uncredited cameo by Jamie Foxx as Django Freeman, shooting the owner of a "Runaway Slave" carnival game, was added to the film only after test audiences reacted poorly to the game's cartoon African-American slave targets.
- Seth MacFarlane wrote a full novelization of his own film's script during weekends while shooting, partly out of boredom, and released it with an audiobook version narrated by actor Jonathan Frakes.
- The film began as an inside joke between Seth MacFarlane and co-writers Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild while they watched Hang 'Em High, riffing on how dull, depressing and dangerous life in the Wild West must actually have been.
- Charlize Theron said she "begged" to be cast in the film specifically because she wanted a chance to work in comedy.
