Dolly De Leon
Biography
Dolly De Leon is a Filipina actress whose career spans independent film and theater. Born in Manila, she studied theater arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman before taking to the stage in plays including Medea, Old Times, Waiting for Godot, and The Merchant of Venice. She made her film debut in Shake, Rattle & Roll III (1991), then spent years in small and uncredited screen parts. Her breakthrough came with Verdict (2019), which brought her a FAMAS Award for Best Supporting Actress, and she drew praise for playing an aging sex worker in History of Ha (2021). In Triangle of Sadness (2022) she portrayed a toilet cleaner on a luxury yacht, winning Guldbagge and Los Angeles Film Critics Association awards and earning Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, the first Filipino so nominated. Later credits include The Missing (2023), A Very Good Girl (2023), Between the Temples (2024), Ghostlight (2024), and Jackpot! (2024).

Early training
De Leon studied theater arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman. Her first acting assignment was a play by Floy Quintos, directed by Tony Mabesa, in which she portrayed a rural laundrywoman.
Getting ready for a role
To get inside her character's head, De Leon wrote a narrative in the first person, so she could understand the character's reasons and how she learned to catch fish and build a fire.
Behind the camera
De Leon took on executive producer duties and acted in Ghostlight, a comedy drama from directors Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson. In the Chicago-set film she plays a community theater performer who urges a dejected construction worker to join their Romeo and Juliet production.
