In the late 17th century, Don Pedro brings word of Spanish gold to the pirate Blackie, who sets out to locate the vessel that carries it while the Spanish colony's Viceroy works against him. At the pirate settlement of Tortuga he and Don Pedro meet three other captains, one of whom offers prisoners and goods taken from a Spanish frigate. Among the captives Don Pedro identifies the Viceroy's wife, and Blackie buys her. Skull, another of the captains, also knows her identity and proposes a bargain with Blackie, who turns him down.
