Plot summary
Salud and Plata earn a living flying passengers and small cargo around South America. The best money comes from crashes they stage, with Salud's brother collecting the insurance. Flying toward Santarém, they come down for real in the Amazon. In a village they encounter Matto, an elderly man who shows Salud a mountain and describes three friends who killed each other. Close by sits an emerald mine belonging to Mr. Ears, who sets black market prices, employs thugs to drive out competitors and keeps his workers in slave labor. Plata and Salud decide to stand against him, delivering their own goods by air and offering the local people a better life.
