Plot summary
Jim Albright is a high school senior in California when the recession that began in 2008 costs his father Greg his bank job. Jim tells his father he will apply to colleges where his track running can earn him part of a ride. Needing to finish a paper in the school library, he notices Ann Matienzo across a bookcase and is captivated, and he watches her rehearse a play in the auditorium. He takes her out of Spanish class with a note he admits is fake, saying he only wanted to talk with her alone, and he compliments her eyes. Ann asks him for a ride after school, and instead of driving her home he stops at a spot above the ocean.
