Plot summary
David Greene plays pickup basketball in Brooklyn and runs a delicatessen, but what he wants is to coach. His wife Jan wants a house and a family, and his letters to colleges go nowhere. Then Cadwallader University, a small Nevada school, offers him its men's team: sixty dollars for every win and a bigger contract if he can beat Nevada State, one of the country's top teams. Jan stays behind. David brings in Hustler, a pool shark; Preacher, who needs to leave town; D.C., a former high school star who runs numbers; and Swish, a sharp shooter who agrees to pass as a man. On campus he looks for a fifth player and finds Bull.

- Fast Break was Gabe Kaplan's big-screen debut, after earlier appearances on television sitcoms and movies, and was one of the first film appearances of Laurence Fishburne.
