Plot summary
Kate Stone is an abrasive executive at a hedge fund in New Jersey, and her staff keeps its distance from her. She often drinks alone. Her estranged brother Joe asks her to watch his tween daughter Maddie for one night. He and his wife Cheryl are moving Cheryl's mother into hospice. Kate says no at first, then changes her mind after learning she is the only one left to ask. The one night becomes a week as the hospice situation grows complicated, and her regimented life is thrown into chaos. Maddie is bullied, socially isolated and angry, and her parents push ballet on her in hopes she will make friends. Kate begins to connect with her niece, who dreams of running away to become a Juggalo.
