In Dublin, Lehiff is a petty criminal who charms a cashier, then punches her and takes from the till. John and Deirdre have recently separated; she has taken up with Sam, a bank manager in middle age who walked out on the wife he had for fourteen years, Noeleen. John is at a loss without Deirdre and is set on winning her back, while his co-worker Oscar brings him to a singles bar filled with older patrons. Garda Detective Jerry Lynch presents himself as the man battling Dublin's criminals and recruits Ben Campion, a documentary filmmaker, to shoot him for a television docusoap, though Ben's boss finds Lynch too nasty a subject.
