Plot summary
Bruce Robertson, a detective sergeant in the Lothian and Borders Police in Edinburgh, is a scheming, misanthropic bully who spends his free time on drugs, drink and abusive sexual relationships. He calls his vindictive plots against people he dislikes, many of them fellow officers, his games. He also bullies his mild-mannered friend Clifford Blades, a fellow member of his masonic lodge, and makes obscene phone calls to Blades's wife, Bunty. The one person he treats with genuine warmth is Mary, a widow, and her young son, whose father he once tried and failed to revive after a heart attack in the street. His main goal is promotion to Detective Inspector, and the chance appears when he is handed the inquiry into the killing of a Japanese exchange student.
