Plot summary
Steven Patrick Morrissey is a shy, sullen, dissatisfied young teenager growing up in 1970s Manchester. A withdrawn loner, he goes out at night to hear music and then sends letters and reviews to music papers. His father expects him to bring in money, while his mother would rather he kept writing, and Morrissey is not sure what he wants. He needs to earn money, and his frustrations keep building. He becomes friendly with the artist Linder Sterling, who urges him to continue writing lyrics and to start performing. He writes songs with guitarist Billy Duffy and tries singing, which he enjoys.
