Plot summary

In 2025, a nuclear war has left New York City a radioactive ruin that people still inhabit. Gangs of scavengers and telepaths share the wreckage, and the city's ruling survivors send their security forces to kill the mutants. To keep the population calm, the authorities broadcast Endgame, a television contest in which fighters battle each other to the death for big prizes. Ron Shannon is one of its veteran stars. Professor Levin, who is not a mutant, hides and protects the telepaths. Lilith, their leader, brings Shannon a proposition: escort her followers out through the desert, and she will pay the team that does it a fortune. Blind monks, roaming predators and government agents are among the dangers on the road. Shannon sets about putting that team together.
