Hal Yamanouchi
Biography
Hal Yamanouchi is a Japanese-Italian actor and voice artist who also works as a dancer, choreographer, stunt performer, and essayist, having begun as a mime. Born in Tokyo and raised in Niigata Prefecture, he attended Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, moved to London after graduating in 1971, and trained in drama and dance as a disciple of Lindsay Kemp. He performed with Stomu Yamashta's Red Buddha theater company, then moved to Italy in 1975 and worked in experimental stage productions. He first gained recognition playing Ariel in more than 300 stagings of The Tempest, which earned him the Premio Internazionale Guido d'Arezzo. On screen, he debuted uncredited in Fantozzi (1975) and appeared in 1980s genre films such as 2019: After the Fall of New York (1983), Endgame (1983), and Phantom of Death (1987). He also had roles in Nirvana (1997), Robot Jox (1989), Push (2009), and The Wolverine (2013), and has translated and dubbed Japanese films into Italian.

Big break
Yamanouchi first gained recognition for playing Ariel in a production of Shakespeare's The Tempest, a role he performed in more than 300 stagings and which earned him the Premio Internazionale Guido d'Arezzo.
First role
Yamanouchi made his screen acting debut in the 1975 film Fantozzi, which Luciano Salce directed, appearing in an uncredited role.
Early training
After graduating in 1971, Yamanouchi moved to London, where he took drama and dancing lessons. He became one of mime artist Lindsay Kemp's disciples.
Languages
In The Wolverine, Yamanouchi played the older Ichiro Yashida, sharing the main villain role with Ken Yamamura, and dubbed his own dialogue and Yamamura's for the Italian version.
Early training
While he was in London, Yamanouchi became a member of Stomu Yamashta's Red Buddha Theatre company, and he performed with it at both the Roundhouse and the Piccadilly Theatre.
Behind the camera
In the Castelnuovo di Porto area of Rome, Yamanouchi helped start MDA Produzioni Danza, a school for dance and the performing arts.
