Plot summary
Cholula, in Puebla, near Mexico City, is a conservative town whose riches belong to a small landowning elite. During the Mexican Revolution, the Zapatista general José Juan Reyes and his troops capture it. Reyes confiscates the assets of the wealthy families and demands heavy financial contributions from them to fund the revolutionary cause. Carlos Peñafiel, the locality's richest and most influential landowner, and the other conservatives must pay what the general demands. Peñafiel's daughter Beatriz is proud and rebellious, and she treats the general with open disdain. She defies his military authority in the town and strikes him during a public altercation.
