SPOILER
The male lead in High Heels was hard to cast because the actor had to be believable both in drag and as a judge; the part went to Miguel Bosé, a famous singer in Spain and Latin America, and his casting was a cause célèbre of the film's publicity.- After trying several voices, Pedro Almodóvar chose Luz Casal, a famous Spanish rock singer, because her voice fitted Marisa Paredes's appearance as Becky del Páramo; the two songs she sang for the film became her most successful.
- Pedro Almodóvar did not like Ryuichi Sakamoto's score for High Heels; for the title sequence and Rebeca's second confession he used pieces Miles Davis composed in the 1960s that were inspired by flamenco.
- As with Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, High Heels was attacked on moral grounds in the United States, notably by certain women's groups, and Almodóvar complained that its US distributor Miramax did not understand the film or know what to do with it.
