Plot summary
Estrella is a girl growing up in the north of Spain. Her father Agustín works as a physician and finds underground water with a pendulum. Her mother Julia instructs her in calligraphy and literature. One night Estrella tries to go up into her father's attic, and Julia sends her away. From Julia she learns that Agustín spent his childhood in the south, El Sur, and that a quarrel with Estrella's grandfather drove him out. Months later, her grandmother Rosario and Rosario's friend Milagros come to the house for Estrella's First Communion. Milagros tells her that during the Civil War the grandfather backed Francisco Franco while Agustín sided with the Republic, and that Agustín swore he would not go back to the south once Franco was in power.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about El Sur (1983)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Producer Elías Querejeta refused to let director Victor Erice shoot the final 90 minutes of El Sur, which would have taken place in the south of Spain, saying there was no financing; Erice and cinematographer José Luis Alcaine did not believe that was the reason, and Erice called the finished film an "unfinished drama".
- The Arcadia Cinema where Irene Ríos's film is screened was really the Cinema Vesa, a former movie theater in Vitoria later turned into a shopping arcade that kept the distinctive shell-shaped façade seen in Erice's film.
