Plot summary
Spain, February 1931, weeks after the failed Jaca uprising, with the Second Republic about to be proclaimed. Fernando, a former seminarian with Republican leanings, deserts his post at the Cuatro Vientos base and escapes two Guardia Civil officers. On the outskirts of a village he meets Manolo, an old man who owns a large country house, and stays there for a while. Manolo welcomes him for his political ideas. When Manolo's four daughters arrive by train, Fernando is drawn to each of them: Rocío, Violeta, Clara and Luz. Each of the sisters takes to him in return, and he is left to choose which one to love.

- Fernando Trueba shot Belle Époque in Portuguese villages rather than in Spain because Portugal was cheaper — his budget was only 160 million pesetas — and had changed less since the era depicted. The house and village were found in Arruda dos Vinhos, the train station in Ríos and the church in Sobral de Monte Agraço.
- Belle Époque carries autobiographical touches for director Fernando Trueba: his real-life father-in-law is named Manolo, just like the father-in-law of the protagonist, who shares the director's own first name, Fernando.
