Plot summary
Jack Cooper leaves the farm for a tryout with a minor league baseball club and wins a place on the roster with his throwing arm and a strong training camp. He picks up the nickname Deuce. His roommate and teammate, he learns, is a chimpanzee called Ed, kept by the club as its mascot until the owners noticed his talent for the game and moved him to third base. The two share an apartment, where Jack meets Lydia, the neighbor, and her daughter Elizabeth, who both take to Ed. Both Jack and Ed improve, and the club climbs into contention. Chubb, the coach, believes Jack could pitch in the majors.

- Matt LeBlanc won the lead role of baseball prospect Jack "Deuce" Cooper in Ed after competing against his Friends co-star Matthew Perry, who also tried out for the part.
