Plot summary
Harry Dunne arrives for his first year at a Rhode Island high school and runs into Lloyd Christmas, who has been passed between homes and now lives with Ray, the school janitor. The two become friends at once, though Turk, the school bully, has other ideas. Principal Collins needs money for a Waikīkī condo he wants to share with Ms. Heller, the cafeteria lady, so he plans a fake special needs class to swindle a grant from a former student, Richard Moffit. Harry and Lloyd happily help, rounding up classmates they consider special, including a reluctant Turk, an injured skateboarder, a boy in a horse mascot uniform and a Chinese exchange student. Jessica Matthews, a reporter for the school paper, finds the principal's sudden contribution suspicious.
