Plot summary
Philadelphia, 1999. In a bar, Santos clutches a briefcase and hurries out; the bartender follows him into an alley and kills him. Across town, Jamie's affair with Carla ends her relationship with Sukie, who orders her out of the apartment they share. Jamie then learns Marian, her friend, is bound for Tallahassee and asks to come. At a drive-away car service, a mix-up hands the two women a vehicle that had already been reserved for a trip to Tallahassee. The criminals who arrive to collect it find it gone, along with cargo connected to their illegal dealings. Jamie pushes for detours and casual encounters at lesbian bars on the way; Marian would rather read Henry James's The Europeans. Jamie's prodding gradually draws her out.
