Plot summary
The Companions separated five years earlier to follow their own paths, and they gather again at the Inn of the Last Home in Solace, the village where several of them settled. Kitiara Uth Matar, the twins' half-sister, was expected and sends only a note. Solace is no longer peaceful: a religious order called the Seekers runs it alongside the Dragon Highlords, who are preparing to conquer the continent of Ansalon, and hobgoblin soldiers patrol its streets. Tanis Half-Elven, Flint Fireforge and Tasslehoff Burrfoot fight past a hobgoblin commander and his minions to reach their friends. At the inn they meet the barbarians Riverwind and Goldmoon, and the Seekers are searching for Goldmoon's blue crystal staff, a sacred relic of the goddess Mishakal. When she heals a Seeker named Hederick with it, the Seekers call for the guards.
