Plot summary
In a wooded valley, Firedrake, a young silver dragon, is weary of a life in hiding and wants the older dragons to accept him as a real dragon. When humans threaten his family's last refuge, he slips away with Sorrel, a bad-tempered forest brownie, to search for the Rim of Heaven, the haven where dragons are said to be safe. On the road the two meet Ben, an orphaned teenager who says he is a dragon rider. Ben and Firedrake take to each other at once, while Sorrel grows suspicious and keeps looking for ways to send the boy away. Hunting them is Nettlebrand, a monster an alchemist made to destroy every dragon on Earth.
