Plot summary
In Los Angeles, Christine Brown works as a loan officer at a bank and hopes to beat her colleague Stu Rubin for a promotion to assistant branch manager. Her boss, Jim Jacks, tells her she must show she can make hard decisions. When Sylvia Ganush, an elderly Romani customer, requests more time to pay her mortgage, Christine turns her down, and the woman is escorted out, facing the loss of her house. In the parking garage, Sylvia attacks Christine and places a curse on a button torn from her coat. Christine's boyfriend, Clay Dalton, a college professor, is skeptical, so she visits the fortune teller Rham Jas, who says a demon has attached itself to her and will torment her for three days before dragging her to hell.

- For the scene in which Ganush attacks Christine in her car, the team built a puzzle car whose front engine compartment, back trunk and all four sides and doors could come away from it, with a roof that came off in two directions.
- Elliot Page was originally cast in the main role of Christine but dropped out over SAG strike-related scheduling issues. The part went instead to Alison Lohman, who did not enjoy horror films but enjoyed doing the stunts during filming.
- In 2024 The Independent reported that the maggots sprayed into Alison Lohman's mouth during Drag Me to Hell were live, but the American Humane Society's page for the film states that production provided documentation that the flies, worms and maggots were all fake.
- To prepare for the role, Lorna Raver met a Hungarian dialect coach and asked to have portions of the script translated into Hungarian. Sam Raimi later asked her to use some of the Hungarian words in the scenes of Ganush attacking Christine.
