Plot summary
It is the winter of 1979. Rusty Whitaker has left Minnesota behind and moved to a trailer in the middle of nowhere, where he spends his days typing. As far as he is concerned he is not alone: Alice, the woman he will not accept has gone, is with him still, and he keeps a mannequin of her beside him. Babs, Ruth-Ann and Fran, three local bullies, take notice. The attention Rusty pays the mannequin stirs a jealous streak in them, and the three of them begin a reconnaissance of his trailer. As the temperature falls, the snowballs fly.
