Plot summary
Sardi's is preparing for a celebration on the night of March 31, 1943, while Oklahoma! opens on Broadway. The musical's success belongs to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and Rodgers's former partner, Lorenz Hart, has left the theater for the restaurant. Hart has stopped drinking, and Eddie, the bartender, would rather not pour him anything; Morty, the piano player, is a sergeant home on leave, and both listen while Hart complains about the show he turned down and about his own career. He declares himself omnisexual, flirts with a boy delivering flowers, and talks about Elizabeth Weiland, a twenty-year-old art student at Yale who wants to design productions. After months of letters and one unconsummated weekend together, he has counted on this night to win her over.

- Richard Linklater and Ethan Hawke had talked about making a film together a decade before Blue Moon, but Linklater held off because he felt Hawke was too young to play Lorenz Hart; in 2025 Linklater said he had worked on the film for 12 years.
- Ethan Hawke shaved his head so that Lorenz Hart's combover could be placed on top, and to depict Hart's diminutive stature the production used what Hawke called "old stagecraft".
