Plot summary
Diane Rhodes is a widow in her sixties who lives in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. Her days are spent serving others, and she begins each one with a to-do list. She brings a casserole to friends; one friend is healing from a recent accident, and gives a lift to a friend who teaches. She also takes clean clothes to her grown son Brian, a heroin addict and alcoholic who lives with his girlfriend Carla. Diane has a key to his apartment. She finds him asleep on the couch, wakes him, and the two argue about his sobriety.
