Plot summary
In a small western town, the sheriff dies. The crooked mayor, The Honorable Hiram J. Sellers, and the leading crook, Phil Decker, appoint the town drunk, Reginald T. "Rags" Barnaby, to be sheriff, believing they can control him. Rags says he will stop drinking, and he refuses to take Decker as his deputy. He names Tom Destry, the son of a famed lawman, instead. Destry arrives by stagecoach. Rags is disappointed: the new deputy will not carry a gun and prefers friendly persuasion and the law to violence.
