Plot summary
Overpopulation and 99.993 percent unemployment have left the United Corporations of America staging the Death Race each year, a race that entertains the public and serves as population control. Racers cross the country, starting in Old New York and finishing in New Los Angeles, and score points by running people down with their cars. Reigning champion Frankenstein faces genetically engineered athlete Jed Perfectus, hip-hop artist Minerva Jefferson, religious cult leader Tammy and ABE, an artificially intelligent self-driving car. Each driver is paired with a proxy, a broadcaster who lets the audience follow the race through virtual reality. Frankenstein brushes off his proxy, Annie Sullivan, and her advice to let rivals pass him. Rebels under former network producer Alexis Hamilton set traps along the East Coast.

- Roger Corman got the idea for a remake of Death Race 2000 when an Italian journalist told him The Hunger Games resembled it. He approached Universal Pictures, which had made the modern remake he felt had dropped too much of the original's political commentary, and pushed to bring back its dark satire.
- Filming began while producer Roger Corman was in his late 80s and during the 2016 U.S. presidential election, with the film featuring a businessman as the Chairman. Corman said he did not want to lean too heavily on the resemblance to Donald Trump's hair because "Trump will come and go and the film will remain."
