Plot summary
Crystal Carruthers lives on the money of her wealthy parents, who give her until Christmas to change her ways or they will cancel her credit cards. She comes across a letter a seven-year-old named Olivia wrote to Santa, asking for a wife for her widowed father. Crystal tracks the family down: Derek Gowen, who plows snow for a living and runs a soup kitchen for the homeless. She volunteers at the kitchen to get closer to him, out of her element among the people there at first, and teaches Olivia skating moves at a local rink. Derek's girlfriend Jillian is in the way, and Crystal keeps working at the kitchen, set on making something of herself.
