Plot summary
Leo Borlock lives in Mica, Arizona, and honors his late father with a porcupine tie, a new one of which arrives from an unknown sender each birthday. At school he plays trumpet in the marching band and works with Kevin Singh on an interview show. Stargirl Caraway, a free-spirited newcomer, makes an impression on Leo and then performs for the Mudfrogs, the football team that keeps losing. Kevin and Leo ask her to appear on their show, and she politely turns them down. The Mudfrogs treat Stargirl as a good luck charm, and she spends time with Leo, nudging him to open up. Archie, who runs the local paleontologist camp, fills Leo in on Stargirl, who had heard about Leo from Archie.
