Plot summary
Tom Turner runs two-bit hustles around Los Angeles and owes a gambling debt to a loan shark named Junior. When he is arrested for working cons, a judge orders him to hold down a full-time job for a year or go to jail. He lands in the post office's dead letter office, sorting undeliverable mail, including letters addressed to God, Elvis Presley, and the Easter Bunny. Reading one letter from a single mother in need, he drops his paycheck and it is mailed back to her. Rebecca Frazen, a burned-out lawyer doing pro bono work alongside him, believes the money was a deliberate gift and rallies the office to keep answering such letters. Tom, the unwilling leader, pursues Gloria McKinney, a coffee bar waitress, while trying to stay out of jail.
