Plot summary
Testimony from people the Nazi regime targeted outside its Jewish victims shapes the account: Roma and Sinti, Catholic priests who spoke out, and others singled out for their faith, ethnicity, politics, sexual orientation or a handicap. Robert Wagemann, who has a physical disability, is marked imperfect and nearly euthanized; his mother smuggles him out of the hospital, and he hides with his parents through the war while warrants are out for them as Jehovah's Witnesses. Ceija Stojka, a Roma girl, watches her father taken away to Dachau. Vera Young, a Polish Catholic teenager, is parted from her family and held in a concentration camp. Natalia Orloff, a Ukrainian child, is sent with her family to the Polish border and put on a train to a work camp.
