Plot summary
In Seattle, George Lass belongs to a crew of reapers who dwell among the living and collect the souls of the dying. Their diner, Der Waffle Haus, burns down, and their head reaper, Rube, vanishes the same day. A new boss takes over: Cameron Kane, a man who died in the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center. He gives the crew color-coordinated smartphones, puts them up in luxury, and tells them that nothing they do matters. Roxy saves people she was meant to reap, Mason profits from his immortality, and Daisy lets a soul wander. George loses her job at the Happy Time Temp Agency after she loudly reprimands a coworker, Amy, who quits and sues.
